those readings, 2017

Collaborative research project by Saira Edwards, Olivia Jones, and Emma Helen Reid.

those readings was a collaborative research project organised by Saira Edwards, Olivia Jones, and Emma Helen Reid in summer 2017. Common ground within their work includes the absence and presence of women’s bodies. They wanted to question some of the readings their work has had, which they saw as reductive and binary because of stereotypical gazes.

They held a group discussion with Annie Crabtree, Niamh Forbes, and Hannah Moitt. They came up with, and shared, suggestions and strategies for ways to deal with readings of their work they find problematic; to be able to assert themselves and contextualise their own work.

‘What are our individual or collective responsibilities and aims?’

‘What could we (individually or collectively) dismiss?’
